Forklift Overview: Core Handling Equipment in Modern Logistics and Warehousing Systems

Forklifts, as special vehicles combining lifting and short-distance transportation functions, are indispensable core handling equipment in modern warehousing, logistics, manufacturing, and commerce.Through the coordination of fork lifting and vehicle movement, they achieve efficient stacking, loading, unloading, and short-distance transfer of palletized goods, significantly improving operational efficiency and space utilization, playing a pivotal role in all aspects of the supply chain.

Structurally, a forklift mainly consists of a power system, lifting mechanism, steering system, and control system. The power system can use an internal combustion engine, battery, or hybrid power, adaptable to outdoor heavy-duty, indoor environmentally friendly, and mixed-use operating scenarios, respectively. The lifting mechanism is primarily hydraulically driven, achieving vertical lifting of the forks through the coordinated action of pumps, cylinders, and valves. Lifting height and load capacity vary from hundreds of kilograms to several tons depending on the model. The steering system is mostly rear-wheel or all-wheel steering, ensuring flexible maneuverability in narrow aisles. The control system integrates joysticks, instruments, and safety devices, balancing ease of operation and operational safety.

The functional advantages of forklifts are reflected in three aspects: First, high efficiency, enabling the loading, unloading, and handling of large quantities of palletized goods in a short time, improving efficiency by several times or even more than ten times compared to manual labor; second, adaptability, with adjustable mast width and tilt angle, and optimized vehicle size and turning radius according to application scenarios, meeting the needs of high-bay warehouse operations as well as heavy-duty transport in outdoor areas; third, safety, with modern forklifts generally equipped with speed limiters, overhead guards, tilt alarms, and anti-tipping systems, and some high-end models have achieved intelligent obstacle avoidance and status monitoring, reducing the risk of injury to people and goods.

According to their uses and structures, forklifts can be divided into counterbalance forklifts, reach trucks, stackers, sidecar trucks, off-road forklifts, and order pickers, respectively targeting indoor horizontal handling, high-level stacking, narrow aisle operations, special working conditions, and order sorting needs. With the development of automation technology, the integration of unmanned forklifts and AGVs is gradually being promoted, giving forklifts a higher level of intelligence and flexible operation capabilities.

As a key node connecting warehousing and production, loading and unloading and distribution, forklifts, with their multi-functionality, high efficiency and continuously evolving technology, are constantly driving logistics and manufacturing towards lean and intelligent manufacturing.
